Caesar's Res Publica

MPhil Confirmation.

Caesar's Bellum Civile has often been considered biased and unreliable and its harshest critics have attempted to promote this judgement even further by alleging the work is a complete fabrication, written purely for propaganda purposes. However, comparisons with other extant sources and analyses of the text itself reveal that rather than distorting facts, Caesar presents them, employing a variety of devices both literary and ideological, in such a way as to 'guide' his audience towards his own viewpoint. Focussing on the opening chapters of Book 1, this seminar will explore these devices – the recognition of which lead to a greater understanding of the purpose and text of the Bellum Civile.
