As a Goth writing histories in Latin in Justinian's Constantinople, Jordanes offers a unique lens into identity in late antiquity. In this talk Dr Malone will be examining how Jordanes presents himself and other barbarians up against a Roman background. The saga of Gothic migration and contact with Rome he presents, along with barbarian figures like Stilicho and Alaric -- and indeed like Jordanes himself, barbarians who are inside the Roman system -- allows us to see in practice how identity could be constructed alongside history.
