Adrian Heyworth Smith Lecture | Pliny the Younger: the Original Sir Humphrey

Pliny the Younger was a successful public official whose career was of special interest to Adrian Heyworth Smith. The speakers will discuss two key works of Pliny: the Panegyricus and his letters, especially those to the emperor Trajan. We shall see how the Panegyric demonstrated how Pliny could be perceived by 'the authorities' as 'sound' and how his letters to Trajan reveal a man on top of the detail, especially finances and public works and religious policy, who clearly did not simply sit in his office all day.
